Divisional Overview

Goldman Sachs Investment Banking, part of the Global Banking and Markets Division, works on some of the most complex financial challenges and transactions in the market today. Whether advising on a merger, providing financial solutions for an acquisition, or structuring an initial public offering, we handle projects that help clients at major milestones. We work with corporations, pension funds, financial sponsors, and governments and are a team of strong analytical thinkers, who have a passion for producing out-of-the-box ideas.

The Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Management team is responsible for centrally managing our M&A business, one of the key products within the Investment Banking Division. The M&A Management team is looking for a Research Analyst to join the team.

The Research Analyst position is a rewarding experience – one that provides an excellent foundation for individuals interested in developing investment banking and M&A product knowledge, understanding strategic decision-making and processes, and driving new initiatives. The Research Analyst will play an important role in the group while building a deep understanding of the Goldman Sachs M&A business.

The Research Analyst will be a part of the M&A Management Group, a small team that works with M&A Leadership and is responsible for strategic analysis, reporting and other functions relating to the management of the M&A business within Investment Banking. While the individual will be part of this small team, there will be opportunities to interact with bankers across all levels of seniority. The role involves:

  • Opportunities to dig in and get “into the weeds” to understand and answer abstract questions relating to M&A
  • Development of thought pieces relating to M&A activity, trends and key drivers
  • Ad hoc projects for senior M&A Leadership, both for internal and external purposes
  • Involvement in the development and implementation of M&A’s most critical strategic initiatives
  • Analysis of GS’s M&A business, including financial performance relative to competitors and market share across industry sector and region
  • Interactions with individuals in various parts of the firm, including the Executive Office, IBD Leadership, Investor Relations, etc.

  • Excellent academic credentials
  • Personal integrity, initiative and leadership qualities
  • Drive, enthusiasm, creativity and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and technical abilities
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and prioritize as necessary
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
