Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience in primary metal production (e.g., extrusion, metal sheet production, or die casting).
  • Experience in metallurgical failure analysis and characterization techniques (e.g., grain size measurement, mechanical strength analysis, or fracture analysis).
  • Experience with process design for material property.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience in primary metal production.
  • Experience with design and development of tooling for extrusion, rolled profile, or precision casting.
  • Experience in the finishing of cosmetic metal components (e.g., anodizing or PVD), and in ferrous and non-ferrous alloy systems.
  • Experience with heat treatment optimization for mechanical and microstuctural properties.
  • Knowledge of material modeling platforms (e.g., Thermo-calc).

About the job

Google's products are known for their clean design, ensuring users can quickly and easily find what they're looking for. As an Engineering Designer, you leverage your strong technical background and understanding of "good" design to look for ways to streamline the user experience. You work closely with the product managers and development engineers throughout the entire production cycle. You design everything from high-level product flow to detailed UI mockups and then use your expert scripting skills to make your designs a reality.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Industrial Design (ID), Color, Materials, Finish (CMF) Designers, and Product Design (PD) on materials inspiration and metal selection for new products to achieve functional, cosmetic, and performance goals.
  • Research next-generation alloy systems, recycling technologies, and net shape production.
  • Collaborate with suppliers in alloy development to maximize material utilization, alloy properties, and response to finishing (e.g., anodization or Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD)).
  • Collaborate with the operations team to ensure supplier capabilities can achieve material consistency and requirements.
  • Conduct failure analysis of cosmetic and functional defects.
