Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a similar field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience tuning audio systems for consumer products.
  • Experience with Consumer Hardware and loudspeakers.
  • Experience of Audio Engineering, Algorithms, Acoustics, or Systems Engineering

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience tuning speaker systems on phones, tablets, laptops, or smart speakers.
  • Experience with and advocating for double blind subjective measurements of audio. Experience with tuning VOIP and Telephony tuning.
  • Experience defining/developing audio algorithms, sound recording/mixing, and critical listening. Knowledge of acoustic measurement and best practices.
  • Familiarity with Music Enhancement Audio algorithms, human perception of spatial sound, machine learning techniques, and/or ML based audio processing.
  • Familiarity with digital filters, Acoustic Echo Cancellation, multi-band DRC, Psycho-acoustic Bass Extension, Beamforming, loudness normalization, and spatial audio.

About the job

The Nest Audio Hardware team develops audio solutions for consumer products. Our team develops custom hardware solutions, integrates them into the system, and is responsible for the user facing performance thereof. Our team collaborates closely with Software Engineering and Algorithm teams within Google Nest and cross-product areas, including Assistant, Cloud, and more.

As a Senior Audio Tuning Engineer, you will develop from the lowest levels of circuit design to large system design and see those systems all the way through to high volume manufacturing. You will lead projects in multiple areas of expertise (i.e., engineering domains or systems) within a data center facility, including construction and equipment installation/troubleshooting/debugging with vendors.

The Google Nest team focuses on hardware, software, and services for the home, ranging from Nest thermostats to Nest smart displays. The Google Nest team develops, designs, and develops new technologies and hardware to make users’ homes more helpful. Our mission is the helpful home: to create a home that cares for the people inside it and the world around it.

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute speaker system tuning for multiple product categories within Nest.
  • Debug and troubleshoot audio system hardware and audio software during development.
  • Contribute to speaker playback DSP roadmap with close collaboration on algorithm enhancements with internal and external developers.
  • Coordinate with audio hardware team on loudspeaker/enclosure architecture, amplifiers, speaker protection, and power system requirements to deliver speaker playback.
  • Validation of playback system via acoustical and electrical measurements. Evaluate and benchmark audio playback performance by objective and subjective methods.
