Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Coatings Science, similar field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of industrial work experience with inks, coatings for polymeric or metal surface finishes in engineering design, and mass-manufacturing (consumer products, automotive, etc.).
  • Experience working with product design and manufacturing design teams.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Plastics Engineering, or similar field.
  • 5 years of industrial work experience in metal and polymer finishes (UV curable inks/coatings, Anodizing, PVD, electroplating, etc.)
  • Expertise in fundamental failure analysis methodology to derive a root cause of failure.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently and be proactive. Ability to take an idea from concept and see it through to production.
  • Ability to travel internationally 20% of the time.

About the job

As a member of a fast-paced multi-disciplinary team, you use your creativity and diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to a variety of engineering problems. As a Surfaces Finishes Materials Engineer, you participate in the design, analysis, and prototyping of new concepts. You work in a manufacturing and product oriented development environment and collaborate with vendors and outside sources to see parts through to manufacture.

Responsibilities

  • Create and develop surface finishes and decoration roadmap that enables future design and product development, in close cooperation with industrial designers, product designers, and manufacturing partners.
  • Engage with global coatings/inks and materials suppliers on multiple projects at once, ensure material design of experiments (DOEs) are carried out, analyze test results, and help select the best material for an application.
  • Lead the development of new finishes and processes to meet the performance requirements of product designs
  • Travel to provide on-site support for project trials and builds.
