Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1 year of experience performing microwave component design using industry standard tools (HFSS, ADS, Sonnet, etc.).
  • Experience using Onshape (or equivalent mechanical design tools).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • Experience with superconducting materials and devices, including design and characterization.
  • Experience with mechanical and multi-physics simulations.
  • Experience with software design/development in Python, collaborative coding, version control, and library maintenance.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, PCB, or silicon fabrication principles and the constraints they impose on physical device design.

About the job

As a Hardware Engineer, you will generate designs and layouts and perform simulations and analysis to implement filters that isolate our superconducting quantum processors from noise. This includes use of software tools such as HFSS, Sonnet, ADS, QUCS, WRspice, and their integration with python-based custom interfaces. You will work directly with research scientists and other hardware engineers to develop E&M, mechanical and multiphysics models to realize new filter designs, and to optimize existing designs to extend performance beyond their original specifications. This includes designs for cavity and transmission line based filters, lumped element filters, superconducting active filters, filters with frequency dependent loss, and non-reciprocal devices.

The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design microwave components, including filters and circulators.
  • Synthesize novel filter designs and develop EM, mechanical, and multiphysics models.
  • Collaborate with the team to test designed and fabricated microwave components.
  • Match measurements of existing devices with simulations and offer informative predictions.
  • Develop and improve the integration of simulation tools with our internal Python code base.
