Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience in using optical design and simulation software (e.g., Zemax, Code V).
  • 4 years of experience in Python or Matlab for image processing and machine learning (ML) algorithms.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • Experience in designing imaging systems.
  • Understanding of optical design principles and techniques.
  • Passion for innovation and a desire to push the boundaries of optics technology.

The Google Tech Engineer Imaging Optics team plays a crucial role in developing cutting-edge optics technologies that enable high-quality imaging across various Google consumer hardware products, including Pixel phones and Nest cameras. The team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of innovation while ensuring reliability and optimizing performance within the constraints of compact designs.


The US base salary range for this full-time position is $142,000-$211,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Conceive, design and prototype innovative optics systems for Google consumer hardware products, specifically focusing on camera lenses and other optical components.
  • Work with teams (e.g., image processing, sensor development, camera architecture) to ensure seamless integration and optimization of the overall imaging system.
  • Design computational imaging lens with imaging system pipeline.
  • Develop computational imaging recovery algorithms.
  • Work with optics manufacturers and suppliers to ensure quality and timely delivery of components.
