Sustainability Expert Consultant - Hydrogen
Who You'll Work With
You will be based in one of our European offices as part of the Sustainability Practice with a focus on hydrogen technologies and solutions for clients.
You will work with an international group of McKinsey partners and consultants to solve the most challenging questions on hydrogen, as it relates to sustainable solutions.
McKinsey has the goal of helping all industry sectors transform to get to net zero by 2050 and to cut carbon emissions by half by 2030 – with this in mind, we have launched McKinsey Sustainability, our new client-service platform. To achieve net zero, the world needs technological innovation, deployment, and scale-up at unprecedented speed. We developed the McKinsey Platform for Climate Technologies (MPCT) to help clients plan, execute, and scale the implementation of these critical technologies. MPCT works with the world’s leading experts to anticipate the impact of new technologies and challenge conventional approaches to established ones. We focus on the most critical technologies: those with the potential to transform our sources of energy for every industry, region, and community. Hydrogen is one of several critical climate technologies.
When you join McKinsey, you are joining a firm whose culture is distinctive and inclusive. We will accelerate your development as a leader to create positive, enduring change in the world.
What You'll Do
As a Sustainability Expert Consultant, you will join our Hydrogen team as part of McKinsey’s Sustainability Practice. You will be pulled in by client service teams due to your well-defined knowledge expertise in the hydrogen space and contribute to or co-lead a team of 3 – 5 consultants to help clients achieve their sustainability goals.
In this role, you will use your expertise to develop insights and recommendations as part of the execution of a client project while helping guide and develop individual team members. You will develop credible and effective working relationships with client team members and influence to action. You will have the opportunity to work across the field of hydrogen - for example:
- Performing market scans for hydrogen project developers
- Operating across the whole hydrogen value chain (upstream production, green derivative or fuel conversion)
- Assisting original equipment manufacturers scale up their electrolyzer business
- Supporting governments and industry associations shape their hydrogen roadmaps
You will work directly with clients as a knowledge and capability builder on the topic of hydrogen. You will also maintain and renew your defined knowledge spike and be recognized by clients, practice, and firm members as an expert in the space. You will help expand the firm’s expertise in the hydrogen space and contribute to knowledge development initiatives that advance the firm’s capabilities. You will drive the firm’s innovation and capability building agenda through expertise in hydrogen and related topics. And you will actively apprentice and support client development (e.g., supporting proposals and contributing to white papers).
Ultimately, you will work within larger teams and make an important contribution to the analysis, design, and implementation of innovative business performance approaches that are tailor-made for each client to ensure positive impact and sustainable results.
You will build on your proven leadership skills and leverage your interest in inspiring others, building strong relationships, and creating a true followership. In a collaborative team setting, you'll work closely with others but also autonomously with little direction.
You’ll also gain new skills and build on the strengths you bring to the firm. Consultants receive exceptional training as well as frequent coaching and mentoring from colleagues and senior leaders on their teams.
