Who You'll Work With

You will lead the Risk Team of McKinsey’s Life Sciences Practice and be based either in New York or Washington DC. The Life Sciences practice includes ~2000 consultants globally, serving clients across the pharmaceutical, med-tech, and life sciences subsectors. We work with clients across functional topics, including marketing & sales, operations, research & development, organizations, strategy & corporate finance, and core technology. The Life Sciences Risk Team’s mission is to enable client impact and innovation, while managing risks to the firm, our clients, and our people. 
The Risk Team in Life Sciences as part of an integrated global risk group that also comprises Life Sciences Risk Partners, Risk managers with functional expertise, and Legal, Communications and Compliance colleagues. This role is focused on identifying and managing risks related to client service in the life sciences industries. You will work closely with the Life Sciences practice’s leaders to provide independent advice and guidance to colleagues across the firm. You will oversee regional Life Sciences Risk managers (for Americas/Asia/EMEA) and regularly collaborate with other firm functions providing legal, compliance, and communications support to consultant teams. This role reports to both the Global Director of Risk and to a Senior leader of the Life Sciences practices and is based in the US.
You should be perceived in all activities as a peer adviser to firm Partners and an ambassador for the Life Sciences Practice Risk Team’s dual mission of enabling client service while managing risks to the firm. 

What You'll Do

In this role, you will lead the Life Sciences practice’s dedicated Risk Team, which collaborates closely with the practice’s partners and Life Sciences consulting teams and other firm functions to review and appropriately manage risks related to client service. This is a fast-paced, high volume role with key responsibilities that include:
  • Providing independent, informed advice to consultants, Life Sciences practice leaders, and firm leaders on risks associated with client selection and consulting  engagements (candidates should anticipate spending roughly 75% of their time fulfilling this responsibility, which is primary to the role)
  • Leading collaboration with other firm functions (including Communications, Legal, and Risk) and stakeholders (industry and functional practices, geographic offices, new delivery models) to provide integrated advice and counselling on multi-faceted issues
  • Monitoring and assessing emerging trends and client service risk priorities within the Life Sciences industry, and updating Life Sciences practice risk guidance accordingly
  • Managing junior members of the practice’s Risk Team including regional Risk managers and risk and compliance operations specialists
  • Leading efforts to improve awareness around firm and practice risk and compliance policies and guidance
  • Leading and contributing on strategic initiatives and risk domains (e.g., contributing to policy reviews, cell risk assessments, compacts, awareness and transparency initiatives, strengthening the 1st Line of Defense)

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated record of experience and subject-matter expertise of Life Sciences industries and markets
  • 10+ years of professional experience with healthcare, pharmaceutical, or med-tech compliance regulations, through legal, compliance, consulting/professional services, and/or risk management capacity
  • Top academic credentials and (graduate degree or JD highly preferred) demonstrated intellectual curiosity through professional training, advanced degree, or professional impact
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to handle complex, sensitive issues
  • Demonstrated track record managing multiple priorities; project management experience required
  • Experience with leading teams across different regions
