Capabilities & Insights Analyst - State and Local

Who You'll Work With

You’ll work in our Waltham office as part of a research team that focuses on state and local public sector research and analytics. The group is comprised of ~12 analysts who have previous work experience in state and local government agencies, international organizations, and research institutions. You will also work closely with leading thinkers in McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), and McKinsey’s Public Sector Practice leadership.
The team’s main clients are state and municipal governments, who engage McKinsey on a variety of topics that our research team supports. Topics we cover include: job creation and economic growth, workforce and labor market dynamics, innovation ecosystems, and crisis response. Economic development is the largest component of this work, and our role in those projects is to analyze regional economic performance and sectors, and then help McKinsey consultants and our clients translate those insights into interventions and strategies to spur economic growth.
Another important piece of the state and local client base is comprised of private companies using economic analyses for site selection, talent sourcing, and wage setting. Our team also works with these clients, using the same economic data and tools, but tailoring the approach for this private sector audience.

What You'll Do

You will bring your experience and expertise to bear in a range of ways – sometimes by answering one-off questions, other times by developing and conducting bespoke analyses to use with clients in specific projects. You will use a combination of public data (e.g., the Census, the BLS) and private data (e.g., Moody’s Analytics, EMSI) in this work.
Examples of past projects include: Working with a state economic development organization to analyze which subsectors are most likely to drive growth, and then analyzing the labor market to identify key occupations for retraining programs in order to support those sectors; building case studies of innovation hubs to help a local nonprofit kickstart their idea to build a hub focused on climate change; working with a state government to analyze the ROI of business attraction incentives to make sure they are deployed efficiently and in-line with peer programs.
Innovation ecosystems is a growing segment of our team’s work – we support clients (including governments, employers, and real estate developers) on building physical innovation districts and hubs. We are hoping you will build expertise in this area and will work closely with a subset of the team to serve these clients.
In addition to client service, there is a knowledge development aspect of this role. As a service line we are constantly investing in knowledge development to ensure we bring best in class approaches and resources to our clients. You will spend some portion of your time building our team’s knowledge, for example, in the form of codified expertise, standardized approaches to recurring questions, or Excel/Tableau-based analytics tools. Examples of some service line assets include: a case library of re-skilling initiatives in workforce development; a tool that makes it easier to access and analyze Census microdata; a codified approach to analyzing labor supply and demand in a region; and a Tableau tool to help site selection clients compare regional attractiveness for opening new locations.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree; an advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS, PhD) in a relevant discipline (e.g., economics, statistics) is preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in economic development, real estate, innovation ecosystems, or other state and local government work
  • Familiarity with US public sources of economic and demographic data, government data, as well as other private sources of regional economic data (e.g., Lightcast, IMPLAN, Moody’s)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Analytical mindset with excellent problem solving skills
  • High level of initiative and entrepreneurial drive coupled with ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels of an organization
  • Experience with business analytics tools (e.g., Tableau) is a plus
