Capabilities & Insights Analyst - Local Knowledge Sustainability

Who You'll Work With

You’ll work in our Waltham office as part of a research team that supports McKinsey consultants and clients on a wide variety of topics that require US & Canada local market knowledge (e.g., demographics, US business environment, regulations, etc.) with a specialized focus on sustainability and ESG topics.
The US & Canada research team is comprised of ~30 analysts based in San Jose, Costa Rica, and Waltham, who have previous work experience in international organizations and research institutions.
This position will work closely with a small cohort of teammates focusing on sustainability topics. Their work primarily serves clients on water and waste/circularity management, carbon markets (emissions, capture, pricing, etc.), and other local topics like regulatory trends, green business development, ESG performance, and environmental value at risk. Aside from serving clients directly, this group also contributes to the firm’s knowledge on these topics by codifying information and creating assets and tools that enable client service.

What You'll Do

You will bring your experience and expertise to bear in various ways – sometimes by answering one-off questions, other times by developing and conducting bespoke analyses to use with clients in specific projects.
Innovation is a strong component of our team’s culture; we are hoping you will build expertise in this area. You will work closely with a subset of the team to support the development of our current asset and client tool pipeline. This process could involve designing and codifying flows and/or user interfaces, providing maintenance of existing proprietary databases, primarily through structuring and managing databases, developing data workflows and processes, and building visualizations, maps, and dashboards.
Some examples of assets the team has built include: a tableau dashboard to visualize different climate risk factors and ESG benchmarks across the US to identify business development opportunities for clients, desalination investment attractive potential heatmap at a county level, sustainability regulations tracker, etc.
In addition to client service, this role has a knowledge development aspect. As a team, we are constantly investing in knowledge development to ensure we bring best-in-class approaches and resources to our clients. You will spend some portion of your time building our team’s knowledge, for example, in the form of codified expertise, standardized approaches to recurring questions, or Excel/Tableau-based analytics tools.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree; advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS) in a relevant discipline (e.g., business administration, environmental science, economics) is preferred
  • 1+ years of experience in sustainability research and sustainability management consulting in topics such as water and waste/circularity management, ESG performance, sustainability regulations, GHG emissions, carbon capture, or other environmental topics
  • Familiarity with US public sources of environmental data, government data, as well as other private sources (e.g., EPA ECHO, GWI, Bloomberg)
  • Excellent oral/written communication and online research skills; the ability to recognize reputable sources and to synthesize information from multiple sources
  • Analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • High level of initiative and entrepreneurial drive coupled with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders at all levels of an organization and collaborate in a hybrid working team environment
  • Experience with business, geospatial, and other analytics tools (e.g., Tableau, ArcGIS, SQL, R, Python) is a plus
