Who You'll Work With
You’ll be based in our office in Budapest as part of GCI Analytics team.
GCI is the analytical backbone of McKinsey’s Commercial Banking and Payments practice that provides deep analytics, research, and benchmarking to financial institutions. By applying machine learning and sophisticated algorithms to the largest and premier commercial banking dataset in the market, our analytics engines help financial institutions uncover revenue opportunities, assist with product strategy, and compare bank performance against peers and more.

What You'll Do
You will join our growing team as Principal software engineer to bring the best of user experience and design from the consumer software world to enterprise.
In this role you will play a pivotal role in designing and building our new state-of-the-art data processing platform tailored to meet the needs of our banking clients. You will be ensuring high code quality and actively contributing to the technical designs of our systems. You benefit from working with the largest and premier banking dataset – terabytes of transaction-level data from hundreds of financial institutions to discover nuanced and highly accurate insights for your clients.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will:
- demonstrate exceptional proficiency in Python and a JVM language such as Java, Kotlin, or Scala; act as the technical expert within the organization in these languages, providing guidance, solving complex technical problems, and staying updated on the latest developments;
- actively contribute to the architectural design of software solutions, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and align with the organization's long-term technical goals;
- leverage your extensive data engineering experience to design, build, and optimize data pipelines, data warehousing, and data processing solutions; provide guidance to the team in this domain;
- be a subject matter expert in cloud platforms, particularly Azure or AWS, and play a key role in designing and optimizing cloud-based solutions, making the best use of cloud services and infrastructure;
- mentor and coach junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and best practices to help them grow professionally;
- collaborate with technical leadership and other stakeholders to set technical direction, define best practices, and ensure alignment with organizational goals;
- conduct in-depth code reviews to maintain high code quality, adherence to best practices, and consistency within the team;
- maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including architectural designs, codebase documentation, and technical decisions;
- stay updated on the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices, and advocate for their adoption within the organization.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of relevant experience solving complex problems in a fast-paced environment
- Extensive experience in software development, with a strong focus on Python and JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, or Scala)
- Proven expertise in data engineering, including data modeling, ETL processes, data warehousing, data processing, and SQL
- Exceptional proficiency in cloud technologies, particularly Azure or AWS, with certifications being a plus
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to architect complex solutions
- Excellent communication and mentorship skills, with the ability to share knowledge and guide less experienced team members
- Previous experience in a leadership or senior technical role
- Familiarity with agile and DevOps practices
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is a plus
- Know when and how to quickly involve any stakeholder into any given problem, using a top-down communication approach
- Good presentation and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex analytical concepts to clients and partners
