Senior Manager, Market & Competitive Intelligence - U.S. Public Sector (SHaPE)

You will provide strategic thought leadership on all aspects of market sensing and competitive intelligence for the Public Sector Practice.

  • Washington DC

Who You'll Work With

You will lead the USG (United States Government) Market & Competitive Intelligence team. You will help set the team’s priorities, manage their work, and provide ongoing coaching and professional development. You will manage relationships with external market research firms. Over time, you will help expand the team both within the US and globally. This is an opportunity to grow and scale the impact of the market intelligence sub-function within the practice.
You will collaborate closely with the Public Sector Practice’s senior leaders, Client Service Team (CST) leaders, Client Development Advisors, and Client Activation Managers, to provide expertise in market research, opportunity tracking and competitive intelligence. You will also work closely with the central firm-wide Market & Competitive Intelligence team, to share expertise, knowledge, and best practices.

What You'll Do

You will lead market sensing and identify appropriate primary and secondary market research sources for specified analyses (e.g., government budgets, upcoming legislation, etc.). You will leverage open-source intelligence sources (e.g., public domain internet search engines, government agency websites).
You will apply deductive reasoning to assemble publicly available information into useful market intelligence. You will collect, analyze, and synthesize multiple data sources into informative and actionable insights to assist public sector client development.
You will work with Client Service Teams (CSTs) to provide background information as well as specific market research data to support comprehensive CST plans and specific opportunities.
You will gather intelligence about upcoming procurements for which McKinsey might be well suited to compete.
You will make recommendations to colleagues about how they could gather useful information about emerging opportunities. You will also serve as the focal point and manage the overall relationships with and overall management of external market research sources.
You will attend conferences and industry days where public‐sector contracting opportunities are discussed and provide a synthesis to the team.
You will provide reports on agency‐specific or thematic issues of interest to and serve as a thought partner to CSTs about the growth strategy for target clients.
You will lead competitive intelligence and develop opportunity‐specific competitive intelligence analyses, along with relative strengths and weaknesses of competitors.
You will leverage open-source intelligence sources (e.g., public domain internet search engines) and apply deductive reasoning to assemble publicly available information into useful intelligence regarding existing activities or potential future actions by our competitors.
You will conduct proactive competitive landscape scans to identify current competitor actions and performance, as well as the emergence of new competitors or the exit of existing competitors.
You will contribute learnings and identify best practices to the larger firm competitive intelligence function.
You will compile client‐specific (e.g., federal agency) competitive landscape analyses.
You will develop opportunity‐specific competitive intelligence analyses along with relative strengths and weaknesses of competitors in multiple contextual settings (e.g., government‐wide, specific agency, discrete opportunity).
You will facilitate competitor war‐gaming sessions in support of priority opportunities.
You will analyze competitor strategies through the analysis and synthesis of multiple data sources (e.g., FOIA requests, government websites, industry news sources, competitor announcements).
You will coordinate with Alliances & Partnerships team regarding firms which could be a partner or competitor.
