Interpreter, Communications Team

  • Tokyo

Who You'll Work With

You will join our Tokyo or Osaka office as part of the Interpretation team within the broader Communications group, which supports interpretation, document translation, and editing services for McKinsey’s consultants in Japan. We are a multicultural group of high performers who value collaborating to solve problems and who share a healthy risk appetite and bias for action; we will inspire you to continually improve and innovate.
As an interpreter, you will deliver bi-directional (Japanese ↔ English) simultaneous interpreting for McKinsey clients and consultants, both in-person and remotely, across a variety of high-profile engagement situations.

What You'll Do

You will deliver accurate and lucid simultaneous interpretation at speed, enabling McKinsey consultants to seamlessly communicate with clients and generate impact across all sectors where McKinsey is active. Covering in-person, hybrid, and remote meeting formats, you will interpret in boardroom presentations, expert interviews, workshops, plant walkthroughs, and roundtable events, among other settings.
Collaborating and sharing glossaries, reference materials and other information with interpreter colleagues and other linguists will be a deliberate, daily ritual as you prepare for upcoming assignments. You will develop close working relationships with consultant requesters, directly contacting them for briefings and the latest meeting materials ahead of your assignments and flexibly responding to changing request situations. Communicating with interpretation users and fellow interpreters after client meetings to gather developmental feedback on your performance will be a regular practice, and essential to your continued development as part of the team.
Outside of interpreting assignments you may be tasked with translating documents, and you will also contribute to or lead team initiatives, ranging from process improvement to skill building and connectivity, as an engaged, collaborative, and caring colleague.
Performance objectives
Our interpreters must translate quickly and in complete sentences, speaking with good enunciation and grammar/usage in both Japanese and English. Interpreting with precision across topics is essential, especially when dealing with numbers. Reflecting audience analysis and cultural nuances in your output is also important.
Apart from proficiently interpreting, you will comfortably role model industry standards and practices and be able to explain the pros and cons of different approaches, such as in-person vs. hybrid vs. full remote interpretation, or Zoom vs. MS Teams functionality. Similarly, you will be expected to leverage industry tools with ease and comfortably guide colleagues to the right tools and solutions when called upon.
In this role, it will be essential for you to maintain a can-do attitude while accepting assignments amid less than ideal circumstances (e.g., no prep material, last-minute requests, unfamiliar topics), and successful candidates invariably stay positive and solution-oriented when faced with uncertainty. Attributes our team collectively hold in high regard include strong interpersonal skills and team-oriented thinking, and an eagerness to build collaborative, amicable, non-hierarchical relationships, both with consultants and team members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Very strong written and verbal skills in both English and Japanese
  • Formal training in simultaneous interpretation for the English-Japanese language pair, with degree or credential certificate preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in a full-time interpretation role in a corporate environment or commensurate freelance experience; primarily simultaneous interpretation experience preferred
  • Experience with interpreting simultaneously via remote meeting tools (e.g., Zoom, MS Teams)
  • Driven to improve own skills as an interpreter; hungry to receive and quick to act on feedback
  • Committed to building a strong personal reputation for reliability, quality, and professionalism
  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration, highly interactive, and communicative in and beyond the core role
  • Compassionate, with an ability to modulate own style of interaction to communicate well with a diversity of personalities
  • Excited to develop new skills and push own professional growth
