Senior Software Engineer

Summary:
The Senior Software Engineer is responsible for analysis, design, implementation, and unit testing to produce high-quality code and successful products. You will use industry best practices while working in a team of high-performing professionals. You are also responsible for maintaining and supporting the application as necessary. Senior software developers are expected to mentor other development team members and continually contribute to process improvement activities.
This requisition is part of the Pearson/MZD team, which develops innovative assessment technology platforms. These platforms are used to create and deliver exams, score responses, and report results. We are now in the midst of building our next-generation assessment platform -- a multi-year project with enormous strategic value, leveraging state of the art technologies and processes. We are looking for outstanding candidates to bolster the staff of this critical project.
You will have a senior role within an existing product group, responsible for ABBI, our interoperable assessment bank and builder -- an established and mission-critical production application.
Location: Remote within the United States
You will:
Create and maintain frontend components and systems, using well-crafted JavaScript (Backbone.js and Vue.js)
Create and maintain server-side Java APIs and components using Micronaut and Play frameworks
Develop and maintain code that meets the ABBI team’s coding standards
Contribute to the “evolution in place” of an existing enterprise application toward new technologies and platforms
Work with ABBI development team members in a collegial and respectful manner
Actively participate in Agile-based meetings
Possess the ability to quickly learn new processes, tools, and business domains
Receive and respond to direction from management and the application architect
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or equivalent technology discipline, or equivalent on-the-job training
5+ years relevant software development experience creating SaaS applications
Experience with development, maintenance, and testing of software, following industry best practices
Experience with highly available, highly concurrent Web-based applications
Experience with git or similar VCS tools
Current Tech Stack
AWS hosted applications
JavaScript, Java, Micronaut, Backbone.js, Scala, Play Framework, MySQL, Docker, JUnit, GitLab, Jenkins, Terraform
Desired Experience
Experience working in an Agile environment
Desire to expand knowledge in many development languages, applications, and tools
Able to think technically and analytically
Ability to understand the philosophy of architecture
Must assimilate information, distill knowledge, apply experience and provide solution alternatives and recommendations
Must have strong time management skills - including the ability to work well under pressure, plan, set priorities, adapt to change, and meet established timelines
Must be a self-starter and detail-oriented
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Proven ability to work and lead within a team
Experience with AWS, particularly RDS and ECS/Fargate, is a plus
Proven understanding of network topology is a plus
Compensation at Pearson is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific location. As required by the Colorado, California, Washington State, New York State and New York City laws, the pay range for this position is as follows:
The minimum full-time salary range is between $100-125k.
