The Government Relations Advocacy Director works collaboratively with the University’s Schools and their Government Relations Directors to execute a nationwide advocacy strategy that advances the University's mission and goals, with elected officials, political appointees, and business leaders in pursuit of public/private partnerships.
Primary Responsibilities
- Direct advocacy efforts on behalf of the Government Relations team and the University’s Schools they represent.
- Develop, strengthen, and maintain relationships with elected officials, policy makers, and leaders of appropriate state agencies.
- Work with public affairs colleagues to identify social and digital promotion ideas to ensure that the University’s point of view is both visible and persuasive in the current social conversation.
- Serve as the primary representative in managing, and working with, consultants contracted by the University to support its initiatives in the relevant state(s) where the University is pursuing initiatives or partnerships.
- Lead the development of a wide range of materials in support of the University’s government relations agenda, such as talking points, legislative summaries, factsheets, testimony, reports, and letters. Create or source all necessary information to support campaigns including, but not limited to, legislative collateral, grass-roots endeavors, and other resources deemed appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge of the digital landscape and evolving trends, consulting public affairs
- colleagues on the best channels, tactics and digital-first content to persuade target audiences.
- Lead the development of meaningful analytics and reporting to monitor and show progress against organizational goals.
- Serve as the University’s representative to relevant non-partisan, non-profit organizations, and policy bodies, such as legislative, governor, and lieutenant governor associations, economic development groups, and related public-private partnership efforts.
- Develop, initiate and deliver internal training programs on the legislative process and state government relations.
- Authentically reflect and portray the mission of the University. Become a reliable subject matter expert on student success, disruptive innovation, and competency-based education.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree.
Experience
- 5 or more years of experience, and/or subject matter expertise.
- Experience working in Higher Education and academic operations, especially with a multi-state presence at scaled, regionally accredited, highly-regarded universities.
- Demonstrated success in leading advocacy initiatives.
- Experience working and succeeding in a remote management environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in defining performance metrics for external partnerships.
- Must have broad knowledge of project management systems, legislative tracking tools, and the ability to clearly integrate with the University’s reporting requirements.
Experience in lieu of education
An equivalent combination of training, experience, credentials, or accomplishments demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements.
The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

Full-time Regular Positions (FT classification, standard working hours = 40)
