Western Governors University is hiring a Database Administration Manager to join our team onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Job Profile Summary:
The Database Administration Manager is responsible for the planning, organization, evaluation, and administration of database infrastructure needs, including management of the Database Administrators. This position will oversee database operations for Western Governors University and reports to the Director of Infrastructure Operations. As the Database Administration Manager, the selected candidate will secure and effectively operate all databases and closely related systems.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Manages day-to-day process flow, department personnel, productivity, and scheduling activities to meet the department's objectives.
Directs department personnel to keep accurate and timely records, documents, tickets, invoices, logs, and all other matters relating to the technology department.
Develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, protocols, and associated IT governance and security compliance activities.
Plans IT projects, project budgets, and resource needs. Negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure technology products and services.
Protects IT assets through disaster recovery, backup procedures, information security protocols, and change control.
Designs and implements on-site and off-site server infrastructure including, but not limited to, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer (ExaCC).
Assesses, approves, and administers all equipment, hardware, and enterprise software upgrades.
Practices in database system asset management, including maintenance of database component inventory, life cycle management, and documentation.
Performs cost-benefit and return-on-investment analyses for proposed systems to aid management in implementing decisions.

Manages and ensures:
Optimal operation of all system equipment (i.e., servers, storage, software, etc.)
Effectiveness of servers, hardware, and associated operating systems and software.
Cloud Infrastructure is utilizing the VMware ESXi products line.
Manages technical change control to ensure that all IT changes are implemented formally and controlled and the appropriate levels of communication are taken when implementing change.
Ensures policies are well-documented and communicated for and to departmental personnel
Manages, retains, provides feedback and training, and administers performance reviews and career opportunities to staff as needed.
Ensures systems are regularly patched and maintained to enhance data security, network access, and backup systems.

Participates in the selection and staffing process by positively promoting the company and position through the interview process, objectively assessing candidates, and selecting the most qualified candidate.
Ensures data security, system access, and backup systems are secure.
Manages on-call team schedules and ensures proper 24 x 7 coverage. Be available for escalations as needed for critical incidents during on-call hours.

Skill to manage and maintain Oracle, MS SQL, and AWS RDS databases on-premises and in cold environments.

Ability to work well with security professionals on best practices and methodologies for securing company assets.
Knowledge of enterprise infrastructure components such as servers, data centers, networks, telephony, power, cooling, and storage area networks.
Knowledge of standard operating procedures, establishing service level agreements, and managing end-user support teams such as help desk operators.
Knowledge of modern infrastructure services methodologies such as private & public cloud, virtual farms, software as a service (SaaS), and software-defined networking (SDN, SD-WAN).
Works proficiently within ITIL requirements for incident resolution, change requests, and problem management.
Ability to manage technology operations on-premises, COLocation, AWS, Azure, and OCI public cloud environments.
Ability to manage a mix of individual contributor levels from Junior up through Principal Engineer.

Job Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in technology or equivalent.
5 years of experience in database engineering and administration.
Broad management knowledge to lead the department.
Preferred Qualifications:
5 years of experience managing a database administration team.
Master's degree in technology or business management.
